Don't Mind the Crows

always keep flyingI love everything about the outdoors and I spend a lot of time there. I have seen some amazing things that many people don’t get to experience in their lifetime. I have also seen the reality of nature and how brutal it can be at times.

For whatever reason something that I always take note of is when I see hawks in the sky. If you ever pay close attention, many times you will see crows following a hawk in the air and bothering it. This always confused me because I know that hawks are more fierce predators but they never seem to retaliate or do anything back. Strange, right?

As I was driving the other day I saw a crow flying with a tiny little bird chasing it and bothering it. It made me feel really good knowing that the crow was getting a taste of his own medicine.

Why on earth did I just tell you this story in a business and professional development blog? I think we have a lot to learn from this story, specifically how it was handled by the hawk.

The hawk showed incredible patience and drive to continue on his path. He knew that he was above the crows so he chose not to acknowledge them when they were trying to taunt him. How many times have you let someone or something distract you or bother you? What good came from giving the situation or that person the time of day? Probably nothing if I had to guess – and that will usually be he case in life, 9 times out of 10.

Second lesson is built around the idea of revenge. The hawk could’ve easily taken out the crows but he chose not to. I’m a firm believer that if you do what is right, in the long run it will pay off. Gary Vaynerchuk is an entrepreneur that I follow and I’ve heard him say that “doing what is right is always the right thing to do”.

We all need to be more like a hawk in our professional lives but also in our personal lives. Focus on what you’re doing and what is right and don’t listen to all the other noise. It may be hard, it may be difficult, but it will pay off. The hawk was so self-aware of who he was that he didn’t have to waste his time with the crows. If you want to succeed you need to adapt this mindset. Know who you are, what you can do and ignore the crows.

What has nature taught you about business or life? I would love to hear some of your thoughts.
