Are there core values that guide your professional life? These values are things that you are not willing to compromise under any circumstance. For me, there are 3 core values that guide my professional life. At The Quantify Group, these are values that make us who we are. Over the next 3 weeks I would like to discuss each value in detail. My hope is that you will get a better understanding for who we are, but also that you may be able to apply some of these principles in your own lives or businesses.
What’s Most Important?
What is the most important thing in your life? Is it your family? Maybe it’s your religious beliefs? Or is it your job? I love the work I do and the business I have; I love helping people and seeing them succeed; but my work is not the most important thing in my life. Enter core value number one: work-life balance.
Work-life balance is a term that is thrown around very lightly in my opinion. Most people would say this is something important to them but I don’t see it being lived out very often. Being a business owner, I totally understand what it means to be “on” all the time. There is work that needs to get done, no matter what it takes. And that mentality requires sacrifice. However, I do not believe we need to sacrifice the most important things in our lives.
No Regrets
Fast forward to the end of your life. How many of you would regret spending extra time with your family? Or, spending extra time doing something that you truly love? I know I certainly would not. Sometimes in the moment is it hard to see the big picture. I get it; I’ve been there. We get so focused on work and “successful” thinking, and we believe that this will lead to true happiness. It can, but not by putting aside the things in our lives that truly matter.
Some people are going to completely disagree with what I am saying, and that is okay. I would welcome a discussion with anyone on this topic. Let me also say that I am not encouraging people to be lazy or not work hard. Quite the opposite actually. I would encourage people to work harder so that they have more time to spend on the things they love.
Work-Life Balance Conclusion
One final thought. What if your job was something that you truly loved? Would it be “work” anymore? Think about that for a little. I love what I do. I don’t consider myself as having a job or going to work. I only use those terms above to explain my point. But if there were something that you love and have a burning passion for, I would encourage you to think about how you could turn that into your career. I am going to be cliché and end this with a quote that I am sure all of you have heard.
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
